In Puerto Rico notaries are what are known as Civil-law or Latin notaries. The fundamental difference with notaries in other jurisdictions is in that in Puerto Rico all notaries have to be lawyers admitted into the practice of law. For over twenty years now a separate notary exam is required for attorneys who wish to serve as notaries in Puerto Rico, thus not all lawyers in Puerto Rico are notaries.
Also unlike notaries in the United States and Canada, once a lawyer is admitted and swears in as a notary, he or she can practice the notary profession for life or until revoked by the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico.
